GREAT LAKES BOAT BUILDING SCHOOL |
|
School Hours |
The school will be open from 8am to 5 pm Monday through Friday. Class begins at 9 am with a lunch hour between 12 and 1 pm. Class ends at 5 pm. Any after hours work will be at the discretion of the staff and instructors. |
|
Absences and Tardiness |
Arriving late or missing class is disruptive to the class and to the student’s own progress and will be discouraged. If a student is late arriving at the start of the class day they should wait until the lecture period is over to enter the classroom. Missing fifteen minutes of class time during any period of the day constitutes a tardy. Missing 50% or more of class time constitutes an absence. Three tardies in one week constitute an absence. Three or more absences in one Quarter will result in the student being placed on academic probation. Any further absences while on probation will result in dismissal without refund. It is the student’s responsibility to inform either their instructor or the Program Director of any circumstances that may affect their attendance or ability to perform the assigned projects or tasks that are part of the boat building program. Due to the nature of the boat building program it is difficult to make up missed time on the shop floor. Tests and lectures can be made-up at the discretion of the instructor. Students will have the opportunity to make-up absences within that Quarter. Make-up time must be scheduled with their instructor and completed before the end of that Quarter. Tardies can not be made-up. |
|
Conduct |
The GLBBS is a drug and alcohol free facility. Students will be respectful of school staff, of their fellow students and of other’s property. Any activity by the student that is deemed as a threat or danger to other students, staff or property can result in immediate dismissal. Smoking is prohibited in any school building, storage facility or near flammable materials. |
Any infraction of these policies could result in probation or dismissal, without refund. |
|
Insurance |
Students are not part of any GLBBS insurance policy for emergency medical coverage and are encouraged to obtain a personal medical insurance policy. |
|
The following SAFETY regulations will be observed at all times: |
No pets will be allowed on school grounds at any time. |
No power tools will be operated until the student receives instruction and signs the Power Tool Use form. |
Smoking will be allowed only in designated areas. |
Personal safety equipment will be carried at all times. |
Any unsafe situation will be immediately brought to the attention of school staff. |
Students will be familiar with, and follow, all safety instructions and rules. |
|
Evaluation |
Instructors will evaluate the students’ efforts and regularly inform them of their progress. A written evaluation will be given to each student at mid-quarter and at the end of each quarter. A formal consultation will take place at the end of each quarter. At this time the student will receive a recorded grade based on the following: |
|
A 90-100% Exceptional work and conduct. No tardiness or absences |
B 80-89% High standard of work and conduct. Acceptable tardies/absences |
C 70-79% Acceptable work and conduct. Acceptable tardies/absences |
D 60-69% Unacceptable level of work, conduct, or attendance. |
F 0-59% Student fails to meet minimum standards of work or conduct |
|
Any student whose grade falls below the minimum Acceptable Level of achievement, “C” 70%, at mid-quarter will be given a written evaluation and a notification two weeks before the end of the quarter whether they have made progress toward a higher grade. Students who receive a quarterly evaluation below 70% will have an opportunity to retake the quarter for the standard tuition fee. If students after completing first and second quarters receive less than 55% average, they will be dismissed. Dismissed students may reapply for reinstatement when the class is offered again. |
|
Voluntary Withdrawal |
Any student who, for emergency reasons, must withdraw from the program, may, at the discretion of the School Administration, apply any paid tuition toward future programs. Students may re-enter the uncompleted Quarter at the next scheduled offering. |
|
School Projects |
Materials for the Individual projects such as the step stool and shipwright’s tool chest in the first Quarter are projects in which at completion, the students own, and may take home as their own property. All other program group projects remain the property of the boat school and may be sold (please see the disclosure on enrollment agreement) Boats and other program projects built by students as class projects may be available for sale to the general public. |
|
Personal Projects |
Personal projects are not allowed during school hours and any after-hours projects must have permission of the Program Director. Materials for any personal project must be provided by the student. |
|
Placement |
The Great Lakes Boat Building School does not have formal placement agreements with any marine trades business. We do, however, maintain communication with many boat building and repair businesses around the country and can assist graduates with their job searches. |
|
|
Certificate of Completion |
Students who successfully complete the Basic Boat Building Program or the Career Boat Building Program with a minimum C average grade will be awarded a Certificate of Completion. Students will receive regular evaluations and will be informed if their grade average falls below the standard for receiving the Certificate of Completion. Students who have grade averages below a C may be allowed to complete the course but will not receive a certificate. |
