The staff and instructors at the Great Lakes Boat Building School are happy to once again team up with the folks at Chesapeake Light Craft. We are offering a series of courses this coming summer in which you can build your own boat in fun and educational, one-week classes. We are featuring boats that have been yearly favorites, as well as introducing some new ones that we think will have great appeal.
All of the classes run Monday through Saturday, 9 to 5, but certain projects may require additional time. You can expect to have the major components of your boat assembled, fiber-glassed, and ready for transporting, to finish at home at your leisure.
Some of the kits require that parts be preassembled by the instructor to insure that you can start putting the hull together on the first day. The instructor will provide hints on how to complete your boat, including paint and varnish work. If you wish to do the latter at the School, there will be a charge of $35 per day to use the finishing room, plus the cost of materials.
After you look at the schedule of classes, be sure to visit the CLC website, www.clcboats.com to learn more about the particular boat that interests you.
JIMMY SKIFF June 15, 16, 17
This year we are offering a Father's Day Special...an adventurous weekend just for Dad and his kids, building a Jimmy Skiff. It is an ideal family boat that anyone can row or sail. Because of the time constraints of a shorter workshop, some kit parts will be preassembled so that one will be able to take home a boat that can easily be finished in the garage. Now, there’s a good reason to get that garage cleaned up! This boat can be built as a row boat, and can optionally be outfitted with a sailing rig.
Tuition: $450 Complete rowing kit: $1250 Additional sailing component: $999
CUSTOM WORKSHOP June 18 – 23
If you are interested in building a CLC boat not offered in the other Summer 2012 "Build Your Own Boat" Workshop Series (or have another suitable boat in mind) then this workshop is for you! Please contact the Pat Mahon at the school to discuss feasibility and specifics.
Tuition: $650
SHEARWATER KAYAK June 25 – 30
This is one of CLC’s most popular touring kayaks, and with the choice of three sizes, 14-, 16-, or 17-feet, you will easily find the one perfect for your size and your style of paddling.
Tuition: $650 Kits: 14-ft. - $999 16-ft. - $1089 17-ft. - $1114
EASTPORT PRAM July 16 - 21
We have offered this class in past years and it is always very popular. The classic pram is an elegant but simple boat, with CLC's Eastport Pram being one of the nicest. This boat can be built as a row boat, and can optionally be outfitted with a sailing rig.
Tuition: $650 Rowing kit: $975 Additional Sailing component: $849
SEA ISLAND SPORT July 30 – August 4
This sit-on type of kayak has become a popular alternative to the traditional sea kayak. The unique hull shape makes it sporty enough for paddling in the surf, and its stability is popular with fishermen. The construction is similar to the other kayaks designed and crafted by CLC.
Tuition: $650 Kit: $1049
SASSAFRAS CANOE August 13 – 18
The Sassafras is a modern interpretation of the classic lapstrake canoe, utilizing the CLC lap-stitch building method. The precision-cut parts and quality materials make a strong but light craft that’s easy to car-top, and to carry, to your favorite paddling waters. This is one of the classes offered last year that filled very quickly, so sign up early.
Tuition: $650 Kits: 12-ft. - $944 16-ft. - $1099
